The Talisman is the flagship itemisation feature of the Lord of Hatred expansion. It is a dedicated inventory tab — entirely separate from your gear slots — that provides set bonuses, Unique item powers, and stacking stat bonuses through Seals and Charms. Ignore it and fall behind at Torment difficulty.
The Talisman tab unlocks during the Lord of Hatred campaign, at the point where you reach the Lorath's Last of the Horadrim questline. It is not available from the start of the campaign — complete this specific quest and it will appear in your inventory as a dedicated tab. Note: there is a known party bug where the tab may not appear for some players in co-op — relogging typically resolves it.
The Talisman system is built around three types of items that interact with each other. Understanding the relationship between them is the key to using the system effectively.
Set items return to Diablo IV through the Talisman system — but unlike Diablo II or III, you do not need to wear matching armor pieces. Set bonuses activate when you equip enough Set Charms from the same set into your Talisman. The number required is listed on each Charm individually.
This is a major design shift. Set bonuses are now build-defining mechanics rather than stat boosts you acquire by replacing gear. A well-chosen three-piece Set Charm bonus can change how a skill or class mechanic fundamentally operates — this is not a minor power bump.
Converting a Unique item into a Unique Charm via the Horadric Cube is one of the most impactful progression steps available in Season 14. The practical effect: any build that previously required two specific Uniques in hard gear slots can now convert one of them into a Charm, freeing that slot for a Legendary with better overall stats.
Conversion results are not fully deterministic — the Cube applies some variance to which aspects of the Unique's power transfer. The item's core special effect always transfers, but numerical values may shift. Only convert Uniques you have duplicates of, or that you can afford to lose. The process is irreversible.
Season 14: Season of Death Awakening brings two Talisman-relevant tweaks. First, the Seal that traded Charm slots for extra Unique Charm capacity was buffed — it now grants up to three Unique Charms with no Charm-slot penalty (older copies convert to the Seal of the Golden Epiphany), which makes Unique-Charm-stacking builds noticeably stronger. Second, Unique Power Reroll now works on Unique Charms and non-Ancestral Uniques, giving you more control over which power a converted Charm carries.
Prioritise unlocking six Charm slots through your Seal selection before chasing specific Charm bonuses. A full six-slot Talisman with average Charms outperforms a two-slot Talisman with perfect Charms. Get the infrastructure first.
Focus on completing the most powerful available set bonus for your class. Check which Set Charms align with your primary skill — the build-defining effects come from set completion, not from stacking individual Charm stats. Farm the relevant content types (Kurast Undercity, Lair Bosses, War Plans) that have the best Set Charm drop rates.
Begin Unique Charm conversion through the Horadric Cube once you have duplicate Uniques or have identified which required Unique is holding a gear slot you want to free up. Stack stat bonuses across Charms to reach diminishing-return thresholds only after set completion.
